How to build a 3-step routine for acne-prone skin

Breaking out? A short routine you follow every day beats a long one you give up on. Here's how to cleanse, treat and protect acne-prone skin, and what to expect.

When you're breaking out, it's tempting to throw everything at it: a scrub in the morning, three serums at night, a spot treatment, a clay mask "just in case". Acne-prone skin almost always does better with less. A short routine you follow every day beats a long one you give up on in a week.

Here's the three-step routine we built ClearCode 2.0 around, and the reasoning behind each step.

First, what's actually going on

Most everyday acne comes from four things happening together:

  • Excess oil. Hormones, heat and humidity all push oil glands to produce more sebum, which is why breakouts often get worse in an Indian summer or monsoon.
  • Clogged pores. Dead skin cells don't shed cleanly, mix with that oil and plug the pore.
  • Bacteria. The acne bacterium C. acnes thrives inside a blocked, oily pore.
  • Inflammation. Your skin reacts to all of the above, which is what turns a blackhead into a red, sore bump.

A good routine works on each of these without stripping or irritating your skin, because irritation is itself a trigger for more inflammation.

For melanin-rich skin there's a fifth issue: the mark a pimple leaves behind. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the brown or dark spot that lingers for weeks after a breakout heals, is often what bothers people most. So the routine also has to calm inflammation quickly and protect healing skin from the sun.

Step 1: Cleanse (morning and night)

Cleansing clears away oil, sweat, sunscreen and pollution so the rest of your routine can do its job. The goal is clean, not squeaky. If your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too harsh, and skin that's been stripped often responds by producing more oil.

How to do it:

  1. Wet your face with lukewarm water (hot water dries skin out).
  2. Massage a small amount of cleanser over your face for 30–60 seconds, paying attention to the nose, chin and hairline.
  3. Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel. Don't rub.

Our Nano Clean Face Wash pairs Sal ACD302, a salicylic active that works inside the pore, with a 9-humectant complex and Rose PDRN, so it clears build-up without leaving skin feeling tight. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can get into oily pores in a way water-based ingredients can't.

Skip: physical scrubs with gritty beads or shells. On active acne they cause tiny tears and spread inflammation.

Step 2: Treat (once or twice a day)

This is the step that targets the problem you can see: active breakouts, redness and the marks left behind. Apply a serum to clean, dry skin and let it absorb for a minute before the next step.

Ingredients worth looking for:

  • Niacinamide helps regulate oil, calms redness and supports the skin barrier. It's one of the best-tolerated actives there is.
  • Tranexamic acid targets the pigment pathway behind dark marks and post-acne spots. (We explain how in our tranexamic acid guide.)
  • Ceramides are the lipids that hold your skin barrier together. Acne-prone skin, especially skin using actives, needs them more than people expect.

Our Nano Repair Serum combines all three, with the tranexamic acid in liposomes so it's delivered where it's needed.

Go slowly. If you're new to actives, use the serum once a day for the first week, then build up. A little tingling is normal at first. Burning, peeling or redness that keeps getting worse is not, so stop and give your skin a break.

Step 3: Protect (every morning)

This is the step most people with acne skip, and it's the one that makes the biggest difference to how your skin looks a month from now.

UV light darkens post-acne marks and keeps them around longer. It can also make some acne treatments more irritating. Sunscreen is what lets the first two steps actually show results.

Many people with oily skin avoid sunscreen because they've used heavy, greasy ones. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that doesn't leave a white cast. Our Nano Shield SPF 50 is a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen (SPF 50, PA++++) with niacinamide, made to sit comfortably on oily and combination skin.

How much: about two finger-lengths for your face and neck. Reapply every 2–3 hours if you're outdoors or sweating.

Your routine at a glance

Morning: Cleanse → Treat → Protect
Night: Cleanse → Treat

That's it. If your skin feels dry at night, a light gel moisturiser after the serum is fine.

Habits that help

  • Don't pick or squeeze. It pushes bacteria deeper and makes dark marks far more likely.
  • Change your pillowcase twice a week, and wipe your phone screen.
  • Wash your face after exercise or a sweaty commute, rather than letting sweat sit on your skin.
  • Check your hair products. Heavy oils and serums can cause breakouts along the forehead and hairline.

How long until it works?

Give any new routine 6 to 8 weeks before you judge it. That's roughly how long it takes for a pore to go from first clogging to a visible pimple, so you're always seeing the result of what happened weeks ago. Marks fade more slowly still, often over two to three months.

Some people notice a few extra breakouts in the first couple of weeks of using an exfoliating active. If it settles within a month, that's usually skin adjusting. If it doesn't, or you're getting breakouts in new places, the product may not suit you.

When to see a dermatologist

A good routine helps with mild to moderate acne. Please see a dermatologist if you have:

  • Deep, painful lumps or cysts under the skin
  • Acne that's leaving scars or pitting
  • Breakouts that haven't improved after three months of a consistent routine
  • Sudden acne along with irregular periods or excess hair growth, which can point to a hormonal cause such as PCOS

Prescription treatments such as topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or oral medication work alongside a gentle routine like this one, not instead of it.

Want all three steps in one box? The ClearCode 2.0 Complete Skin Kit has the face wash, serum and SPF 50 together. As with any new product, patch-test on your inner arm or jawline for 24 hours first.
